Intro
The legendary Donald Campbell set a world speed record in the shadow of ‘The Old Man’ and Arthur Ransome wrote Swallows and Amazons whilst gazing over Lake Coniston towards the mountain of the same name. Today you can even enjoy a pint of ‘Old Man’ beer from the Coniston brewery.
Come and see for yourself what it is that makes this mountain so awe-inspiring.
We begin our ascent from the meeting of the 3 shires of Westmorland, Lancashire and Cumbria. Ascending over Little Carrs we can take a few moments to visit World War II wreckage, then as we continue on over Great Carrs and on to Swirl How we pass by the ‘Prison Band’!
Descending to Levers Hause we enjoy beautiful views down to Levers Water before our final ascent to the summit of Coniston Old Man 803 metres. Our descent route takes us close to the imposing and atmospheric Dow crag before heading toward the village of Coniston itself.

Course Requirements
No previous mountaineering experience is required for this trip, however, the fitter you are the more you will enjoy your day. Although we do begin this walk quite high up, there is still some considerable ascent (and distance) before reaching the Old Man, therefore a few training walks and visits to the gym will undoubtedly add to your overall enjoyment of the trip.
We recommend that you follow a fitness plan in preparation for your challenge, an example of one will be sent to you when you have confirmed your booking.
Although the fitness plan we will send to you has been devised by a fitness professional, this is only provided as a guide and you should seek professional advice before starting your own fitness regime.
