About this adventure

Take on the London to Paris cycle challenge using the Avenue Verte route from Newhaven to Dieppe. Travel between these two iconic cities and take in the bright lights and vibrant attractions of London and Paris. This 2-day route is a gentler approach to the popular London-to-Paris 24 hours cycle challenge.

The Avenue Verte route was developed to celebrate the 2012 Olympics in London. Cycling organisations in Britain and France developed a new cycle route between the London Eye and the Notre Dame in Paris. This route crosses the Channel between Newhaven and Dieppe, meaning the overall route is 100km shorter than the classic Dover to Calais route. This route follows quiet roads, established cycle tracks and lanes.

  • Day 1 - London Eye to Newhaven

You’ll begin your cycle from the London Eye, following London’s south bank to join the cycle superhighway CS7 in Kennington, following this to Colliers Wood. The Wandle Trail is then followed through suburban south London on a mixture of off-road cycle tracks and quieter residential streets. You’ll then leave London via the North Downs.

You’ll reach Red Hill and cycle over the undulating hills of the Surrey Greensand ridge. You’ll use the cycle tracks to pass through Horley, towards Crawley. Leaving Crawley, the route then follows a rural cycle track along a disused railway that connects Three Bridges and Tunbridge Wells. You then skirt along the Worth Forest before descending into Ashdown Forest.

From here you’ll follow minor country roads through the Sussex Weald towards Polegate. You then follow the South Coast Cycleway that cuts through the South Downs by the way of Cuckmere gap, to reach the Newhaven ferry terminal. You’ll spend the night in Newhaven, to cross the channel into Dieppe in the morning.

    95 miles (165km)

  • Day 2 - Newhaven to Paris

Get prepared for a big day. You’ll cross the channel from Newhaven to Dieppe. Arriving in Dieppe, you’ll use the quieter roads following the voie verte along the course of a disused railway line, ascending very gently to Neufchâtel-en-Bray.

You’ll then cross the Bray by following the cycle track ascending gently along an old railway trackbed to Serqueux and the spa town of Forges-les-Eaux. Follow the minor roads to Gournay-en-Bray. Next you begin the steep climb onto a chalk ridge before descending into Gisors.

From Gisors, cross undulating roads across the Vexin, before descending to end up beside the river Oise. From here, the route levels out as you follow forest tracks through the woodland of St Germain-en-Laye to reach the edge of Paris. You’ll then continue along the river Seine to reach St Denis. From St Denis, follow urban canal towpaths, and city side streets to reach the centre of Paris where the ride ends in front of the Notre Dame cathedral.

Make sure to have a picture in front of this Cathedral to celebrate your achievement.

    146 miles (235km)

  • Day 3 - Rest day and return home

Your final day is a rest day and an opportunity to celebrate your achievement. Use this day to explore the sites of Paris – why not visit the museum or gallery before travelling back to the UK.
