About this Adventure

Cycle along the River Rhone starting in Lyon, pass through vineyards, olive groves and charming French villages as you ride south to the city of Avignon. Enjoy the changing landscapes as you make your way towards Provence and the South of France. The route is almost entirely flat, sticking mostly to cycle paths and quiet roads, making it perfect for leisure cyclists.

About & Details

Start your journey along the Rhone in the city of Lyon, famous for its gastronomy, be sure to enjoy some food at the local ‘bouchons’. As you cycle along the river heading south, pass through historical towns such as Valence, known as the gateway to the South of France and being famous for its cathedral and museums. The cycling gets more spectacular as you get further south, with vineyards, lavender fields, and olive groves lining the route. We provide you with GPX files, a guidebook and take all the stress out of organising a cycling holiday, you just turn up and ride! This trip follows the lower section of the Rhone, we also offer trips along the full length of the river as it flows down through France into the Mediterranean.

To book as a self-guided trip simply select the date in the calendar and follow the booking procedure. You will then receive an automated confirmation and full details will follow from our office in due course.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Lyon

    Arrival at your accommodation and relax for the evening.

  • Day 2 - Lyon to Vienne

    Cycling out of Lyon following the river south, passing through a series of industrial towns along surfaced towpaths to the town of Vienne. 20.5 miles (33km)

  • Day 3 - Vienne to Sablons

    Cycling out of Vienne follow the Rhone along flood dykes and riverside tracks. Admire the terraced vineyards of Cote-Rotie and Condrieu climbing up the valley side. Explore the historical village of Serrieres before reaching Sablons. 20.5 miles (33km)

  • Day 4 - Sablons to Tournon-sur-Rhone

    Continuing south along the left bank of the Rhone pass orchards and industrial towns with the valley starting to narrow with wooded hillsides coming down closer to the river. Cycle across the bridge at the medieval walled town of St Vallier before reaching Tournon. 23 miles (37km)

  • Day 5 - Tournon-sur-rhone to Valence

    Following riverside roads on the right bank of the river pass the confluence of the Rhone and Isere. Eventually leaving the riverbank behind to reach Valence, the gateway to the South of France. 14 miles (23km)

  • Day 6 - Valence to Le Pouzin

    Cycling out of Valence cross to the right bank and continue along riverside tracks and quiet roads, with wooded hillsides rising west of the Rhone. Passing through Printegarde nature reserve follow flood dykes to Le Pouzin. 21 miles (34km)

  • Day 7 - Le Pouzin to Montelima

    Following a limestone hillside, cycle along small roads and field tracks before passing through the town of Cruas. Ride across the river and reach Montelimar. 19 miles (30.5km)

  • Day 8 - Montelimar to Pont-St Esprit

    Cycling along stretches of riparian woodland to Bourg-St Andeol cross onto a large island between the Rhone and a canal. Follow quiet roads along this island through farmland before re-crossing the Rhone on the ancient bridge at Pont-St Esprit. 26 miles (42km)

  • Day 9 - Pont-St Esprit to Avignon

    Cycling further into Provence pass through the vineyards of the Cotes du Rhone. Crossing the river three times before reaching the historic Papal capital of Avignon. Enjoy exploring this fascinating city! 30 miles (49km)

Charity Information

How to take part for Charity
To do this challenge for a charity there is a non-refundable registration fee, payable to Maximum Adventure at the time of booking. You can then choose between the two different options below.

Self-Funding
Pay a registration fee at the time of booking then the balance due 10-weeks before departure. With the self-funding option, you personally cover the full cost of the challenge. This option means that there is no minimum sponsorship target due, but we encourage you to raise as much money as you can for the charity.

Minimum Sponsorship Pledge
Pay a registration fee at the time of booking and confirm with your charity their minimum fundraising requirements for the balance. This will typically be double the cost of the adventure, less the registration fee. With the minimum sponsorship pledge option, you must submit 80% of your fundraising target to the charity 10 weeks before the departure date.
