Take on the gauntlet of Hadrian’s Wall Marathon, one of the greatest outdoor challenges in the UK. Completing the 24 mile hike over two days, you start at Lanercost Priory ticking off Roman forts and milecastles as you make your way to Chollerford. The scenery is spectacular with sweeping views across Northumberland National Park and the Roman remains are fascinating.

Our itineraries follow Hadrian’s Wall from West to East. The reason for this is that the prevailing winds, in the UK, during the months of April – October are generally from the West. This means that, in all likelihood, you will be walking with the wind on your backs. This is much nicer than walking into the wind. Should you however prefer to walk East to West then we can, of course, simply reverse the itinerary for you. Just let us know and we will arrange this for you.

Quick Facts

  • 2 days’ self-guided walking
  • 24 miles (38.6km) and 760m (2493ft) of ascent
  • Amazing scenery along the wall
  • Unique mix of stunning craggy landscapes and world class Roman archaeology
  • Good quality twin room accommodation

About & Details

Challenge yourself to complete this famous 24-mile section of Hadrian’s Wall in 2 days. Starting at Lanercost Priory to the east of Carlisle, it includes the very best gems of the wall, including Great Chesters Fort, the imposing Steel Rigg, the iconic Sycamore Gap (where Robin Hood Prince of Thieves was filmed), the vast Housesteads Fort and many, many milescastles finally finishing in Chollerford.

84 miles in length Hadrian’s Wall traverses from Bowness on Solway on the West coast of England through beautiful countryside and historic cities to Segedunum Fort on the East coast of England. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, it is the best-preserved frontier of the Roman Empire. Building began in 122 AD during the reign of emperor Hadrian and included the stone base of the wall, forts every five miles, a military road, defensive ditches and milecastles. Astoundingly, a significant proportion of the wall still stands and you can clearly gain a sense of what it must have been like for the Roman Legionnaires to be stationed in this far-flung corner of the Roman Empire.

The trail is well signposted and despite the fact that it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern England, it retains a real sense of quiet wilderness. Take time out of your itinerary to visit a Roman Fort and one of the excellent museums such as Chesters Museum near Chollerford or simply sit on Steel Crag and admire the fantastic views and quiet solitude.

You will need full kit including a waterproof jacket and trousers, a comfortable day sack and comfortable shoes. You will receive a more detailed kit list upon booking.
The price for this trip is based on 2 people sharing.

Trip Extension - Newcastle

United by seven bridges across a spectacular riverscape, Newcastle (a city on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (a town on the south bank) form a single, diverse and extremely vibrant visitor destination.

With so many different areas each offering new sights, sounds and experiences, you’ll be amazed at how much is on offer whatever your tastes. World-class culture, vibrant nightlife, award-winning dining, inspiring heritage, fantastic shopping and acclaimed architecture are linked here, as nowhere else, by the famous Geordie spirit.

Football is one of Newcastle and Gateshead’s greatest passions, so it’s no surprise that St. James’ Park is a mecca for soccer fans.  With an atmosphere that is second to none on a match day, with cheers and chants ringing out across the city, a day out at St. James’ Park is a must for any footie lover.

It wouldn’t be a visit to Newcastle without catching a glimpse of the castle to which Newcastle owes its name.  Newcastle Castle and Keep dates back to 1178 and is one of the finest examples of Norman stone in Britain. Hop on a city tour to take you to the Keep and allow you access to its turrets where you can admire magnificent views across the city.

Don’t miss the iconic Angel of the North.  Constructed using weather-resistant steel and standing 20 meters high this legendary Northern giant is said to signify the transition from an industrial to an information age and has long dominated the Gateshead skyline, becoming an awe-inspiring symbol of North East pride and culture.  Why not spoil yourself and combine this with a shopping trip to the ultimate shopping experience at the Metro Centre, Gateshead.

For those who like a tipple, Newcastle is becoming the go-to place for independent brewers with breweries, micro pubs and tap houses.  Head into the city and you’ll find one to just right for you!

Tired feet? Why not hop onto a sightseeing cruise with River Escapes and experience the North’s great cities from the River Tyne.  Sail past renowned landmarks such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Tyne Bridge, the Sage and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art whilst enjoying a relaxing drink.

Whether you’re a history buff, a sports fan or prefer to indulge in a little retail therapy, Newcastle has it all!
