Enjoy the unique mix of stunning craggy landscapes, far-reaching views across the Solway Firth, green fields and historic cities on this self-guided 7-night walking trip along Hadrian’s Wall. Along the way visit one of the many Roman Forts and museums to imagine what life must have been like here as a Roman soldier. Take time to soak up the quiet solitude of this corner of England. Shorter or longer bespoke itineraries are available on request.

Our itineraries follow Hadrian’s Wall from West to East. The reason for this is that the prevailing winds, in the UK, during the months of April – October are generally from the West. This means that, in all likelihood, you will be walking with the wind on your backs. This is much nicer than walking into the wind. Should you however prefer to walk East to West then we can, of course, simply reverse the itinerary for you. Just let us know and we will arrange this for you.

About & Details

This self-guided walk along Hadrian’s Wall National Trail is a chance to admire the magnificence of this incredible structure. 84 miles in length it traverses from Bowness on Solway on the West coast of England through beautiful countryside and historic cities to Segedunum Fort on the East coast of England. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, it is the best-preserved frontier of the Roman Empire. Building began in 122 AD during the reign of emperor Hadrian and included the stone base of the wall, forts every five miles, a military road, defensive ditches and milecastles. Astoundingly, a significant proportion of the wall still stands and you can clearly gain a sense of what it must have been like for the Roman Legionnaires to be stationed in this far-flung corner of the Roman Empire.

The trail is well signposted and despite the fact that it has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Northern England, it retains a real sense of quiet wilderness. Take time out of your itinerary to visit a Roman Fort and one of the excellent museums such as Tullie House in Carlisle or Chesters Museum near Chollerford or simply sit on Steel Crag and admire the fantastic views and quiet solitude.

We take the stress out of your trip with expert local knowledge, hand-picked accommodation, luggage transfers and detailed support to help you find your way. You will need full walking kit including a waterproof jacket and trousers, a comfortable day sack and comfortable walking boots. You will receive a more detailed kit list upon booking.

The price for this trip is based on 2 people sharing.

Evening meals and lunches

You can purchase evening meals either at the accommodation or nearby. When our event planners send you the schedule with itinerary you could prearrange directly with the accommodation or during the walk.

For lunches we would suggest bringing some of your own favourite snack bars and then asking the accommodation for a packed lunch for the following day and also supplementing that at stops en-route.

Accommodation

Accommodation is generally at B&B, guest houses and small hotels. Once booked in, your event planner will send you a list of your booked accommodation. It is possible to adjust according to preference at this stage so please mention it if you wish to change.

Dog-friendly

If you would like to bring your four legged friend, then we will do our best to source dog friendly accommodation. It is usually possible but if it were not, then we would suggest a change of date to enable it or offer a refund. There may be a small surcharge for the overnight stays. Therefore, once booked in, please alert your event planner that you would like to bring your dog and we can proceed from there.

Need a guide?

If you would prefer to have a guide for your walk, even just for one day, then we are happy to help. We can provide a qualified leader (also first aid qualified) to lead your trek or on just one of the sections. Just ask us.
A guide can not only take the stress out of navigation, but you will also find them a great asset in terms of providing an insight into all things environment and nature.

At the end of your trip

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end at some point and when you arrive at Segedunum, you have one of several options. If you have not booked an additional night’s stay in Newcastle then we can transfer your luggage to a location of your choice. From there you may have onward travel arranged as per the ‘Getting There and Back’ tab above.

Some people like to treat themselves to a night’s stay in Newcastle at the end. And why not? You’ve earned it. We suggest a night near the Quayside overlooking the river.  You can arrange this as an optional add on with your event planner.

After you book

After placing your booking with us, you will in the first instance receive an automated email from our system confirming receipt of your reservation. If you don’t receive it, it is worth checking your spam/clutter folder.

In the process of placing your booking, you will generally set up an access password to our online gateway where you can review the details of the booking.

Your personal event planner will then be in touch with you to start to confirm the details. This contact will usually be taken up in the working day after receipt of your booking, but may, in busy times, take a little longer. The event planner will then liaise with you regarding the details of the course. If you have any specific requirements, please do mention it at this stage.

Trip Extension - Newcastle City

United by seven bridges across a spectacular riverscape, Newcastle (a city on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (a town on the south bank) form a single, diverse and extremely vibrant visitor destination.

With so many different areas each offering new sights, sounds and experiences, you’ll be amazed at how much is on offer whatever your tastes. World-class culture, vibrant nightlife, award-winning dining, inspiring heritage, fantastic shopping and acclaimed architecture are linked here, as nowhere else, by the famous Geordie spirit.

Football is one of Newcastle and Gateshead’s greatest passions, so it’s no surprise that St. James’ Park is a mecca for soccer fans.  With an atmosphere that is second to none on a match day, with cheers and chants ringing out across the city, a day out at St. James’ Park is a must for any footie lover.

It wouldn’t be a visit to Newcastle without catching a glimpse of the castle to which Newcastle owes its name.  Newcastle Castle and Keep dates back to 1178 and is one of the finest examples of Norman stone in Britain. Hop on a city tour to take you to the Keep and allow you access to its turrets where you can admire magnificent views across the city.

Don’t miss the iconic Angel of the North.  Constructed using weather-resistant steel and standing 20 meters high this legendary Northern giant is said to signify the transition from an industrial to an information age and has long dominated the Gateshead skyline, becoming an awe-inspiring symbol of North East pride and culture.  Why not spoil yourself and combine this with a shopping trip to the ultimate shopping experience at the Metro Centre, Gateshead.

For those who like a tipple, Newcastle is becoming the go-to place for independent brewers with breweries, micro pubs and tap houses.  Head into the city and you’ll find one to just right for you!

Tired feet? Why not hop onto a sightseeing cruise with River Escapes and experience the North’s great cities from the River Tyne.  Sail past renowned landmarks such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Tyne Bridge, the Sage and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art whilst enjoying a relaxing drink.

Whether you’re a history buff, a sports fan or prefer to indulge in a little retail therapy, Newcastle has it all!

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - arrival in Carlisle

Arrive at your accommodation in Carlisle.

  • Day 2 – Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle

Starting with a Taxi transfer out to Bowness on Solway, walk alongside a quiet road overlooking the Solway Firth, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, via the village of Burgh by Sands to the River Eden as it winds into the city of Carlisle.
    22km (14 miles) and 133m (436ft) of ascent.

  • Day 3 – Carlisle to Banks

Take time to see the castle and cathedral before heading out of the city across green fields to Banks. The wall here was an earth structure, so very little remains.
    22km (14 miles) and 277m (909ft) of ascent.

  • Day 4 – Banks to Once Brewed

Today is filled with Roman landmarks. Spot turrets, mile castles, two well preserved forts and a substantial section of the wall and ascend Winshields Crag, the highest point on the route, to admire fantastic views across the surrounding countryside before finishing in the hamlet of Once Brewed.
    22km (14 miles) and 585m (1,919ft) of ascent.

  • Day 5 – Once Brewed to Brocolitia

Prepare yourself for the most iconic section of the wall – Steel Rigg and Sycamore Gap. Famous as the site of numerous films including Robin Hood, the wall follows the escarpment before descending to Housesteads Roman Fort, where you can see the enormous scale of the military operations and civilian settlement which was here almost 2000 years ago. You then gain stunning views from Sewingshields Crags before walking alongside the Roman military road to Brocolitia Fort and Carraw.
    13km (8 miles) and 363m (1191ft) of ascent.

  • Day 6 – Brocolitia to East Wallhouses

The days starts with a pleasant walk into Chollerford and then it’s a surprisingly enjoyable walk over Accomb Fell beside the old Roman road (now the B6318) to East Wallhouses.
    23km (14 miles) and 324m (1063ft) of ascent.

  • Day 7 - East Wallhouses to Newburn

The trail passes alongside the military road, before heading through Heddon on the Wall down to the River Tyne as you walk into the outskirts of Newcastle to the suburb of Newburn.
    16km (10 miles) and 108m (354ft) of ascent.

  • Day 8 - Newburn to Wallsend

Quite a contrast for this final stage of the trail as you walk alongside the River Tyne beneath Newcastle’s famous bridges and eye-catching architecture to the end of the wall at Segendum Fort. The trip ends at the end of the walk unless you have booked extra nights or other optional services with us.
    17km (10 miles) and 213m (699ft) of ascent.

We will always endeavour to accommodate you in the locations detailed in the above itinerary. Due to very high demand, some accommodation providers may occasionally have limited availability and so we may need to accommodate you in an alternative location, nearby. In this case, we will arrange a taxi transfer for you to take you from the trail to your accommodation and back again the following morning. We will notify you of this when confirming your booking.

Please note: This itinerary is a guide only. Timings are approximate.
