Oxford

Oxford is world-famous for its prestigious university but there is so much more to this remarkable city than its 38 colleges in the city’s medieval centre.  Nicknamed the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’, Oxford offers an abundance of history, stunning architecture, museums, art galleries as well as plenty of restaurants to please any foodie.

The historic centre is small enough to explore on foot.  Visit Oxford castle, Carfax Tower for stunning views of the city, the iconic Bodleian Library, Museum of Natural History or book a University of Oxford tour to explore its stunning architecture.

Tired of walking? Give your feet a rest and hop on an open bus tour.  If boating is more your thing hire a punt or rowing boat and spend a relaxing afternoon floating down the River Cherwell taking in Oxford’s famous sights. For the nature lovers out there don’t miss the Oxford Botanic Gardens & Arboretum, a quiet corner of this bustling city.

There is no shortage of art galleries and museums in this historic city where you can spend hours wandering around the Museum of Natural history, Museum of history of Science or for a more contemporary feel visit the Modern Art Oxford gallery.

With its mix of ancient and modern, Oxford has something for everyone.  You can shop till you drop at the modern Westgate shopping centre, wander around Oxfords’ narrow lanes with its boutiques and independent shops or visit the historic covered market.  Remember to look out for any familiar sights that have been used as a backdrop to many films and TV programmes from the very English Inspector Morse to Harry Potter.

Oxford’s bars and restaurants offer something for everyone. Whether you enjoy a three-course dinner or a tipple in a pub steeped in charm and history you will find a place to suit you.  If you are a night owl you can catch the latest blockbuster, book a show or enjoy a night of comedy at one of the many comedy clubs.

Behind the architecture of the world-famous University lies a buzzing city steeped in history, culture and entertainment and is definitely one for the bucket list.
