Follow the trail as it passes through historic towns with beautiful scenery heading towards the very source of the Thames in the Cotswolds. You won’t find any hills along this trail, making it a great choice for beginners and allowing a lot more time to explore the Capital and surrounding areas of natural beauty.

Stage 2 showcases the best of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Oxfordshire; featuring views of Windsor Castle, Eton College, historic churches, museums, and grand estates… to name just a few! As the mileages aren’t too challenging, you’ll have plenty of time to soak up the beauty of these regions and the river that connects them.

Evening meals and lunches

You can purchase evening meals either at the accommodation or nearby. When our adventure travel planners send you the schedule with your itinerary you could prearrange directly with the accommodation or during the walk.

For lunches we would suggest bringing some of your own favourite snack bars and then asking the accommodation for a packed lunch for the following day and also supplementing that at stops en-route.

Accommodation

Accommodation is generally at B&B, guest houses and small hotels. Once booked in, your event planner will send you a list of your booked accommodation. It is possible to adjust according to preference at this stage so please mention it if you wish to change.

Dog-friendly

If you would like to bring your four legged friend, then we will do our best to source dog friendly accommodation. So, it is usually possible but if it were not, then we would suggest a change of date to enable it.  There may be a small surcharge for the overnight stays.  Therefore, once booked in, please alert your adventure travel planner that you would like to bring your dog and we can proceed from there.

Need a guide?

If you would prefer to have a guide for your walk, even just for one day, then we are happy to help. We can provide a qualified leader (also first aid qualified) to lead your trek or on just one of the sections. Just ask us.
A guide can not only take the stress out of navigation, but you will also find them a great asset in terms of providing an insight into all things environment and nature.

Dates and prices

For available dates please see the ‘book now’ option on the left hand side on desktops or at the bottom on mobiles. You can reserve your space via this route.

After you book

After placing your booking with us, you will in the first instance receive an automated email from our system confirming receipt of your reservation. If you don’t receive it, it is worth checking your spam/clutter folder.

In the process of placing your booking, you will generally set up an access password to our online gateway where you can review the details of the booking.

Your personal adventure travel planner will then be in touch with you to start to confirm the details. This contact will usually be taken up in the working day after receipt of your booking, but may, in busy times, take a little longer. The adventure travel planner will then liaise with you regarding the details of the course. If you have any specific requirements, please do mention it at this stage.

At the end of your trip

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end at some point and when you arrive in Goring, you have one of several options. If you have not booked an additional night’s stay then we can transfer your luggage to a location of your choice. From there you may have onward travel arranged as per the ‘Getting There and Back’ tab above.

Some people like to treat themselves to a night’s stay in Goring at the end. And why not? You’ve earned it.  You can arrange this as an optional add on with your event planner.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 – Arrival in Windsor

Arrive at your accommodation in Windsor.

  • Day 2 – Windsor to Maidenhead

As you leave Windsor, you will pass the historic Eton College founded in 1440 by Henry VI. As one of the most prestigious schools in the country, it has educated many politicians and royal family members. You will follow the towpath along Buckinghamshire bank before passing under Brunel Bridge in Maidenhead.

6.5 miles (10km) and minimal ascent

  • Day 3 – Maidenhead to Marlow

This section is known to showcase one of the most beautiful stretches of the river with a rich heritage. You will walk alongside the famous Boulter’s Lock. Just upstream from the lock you will find the weir which is one of the most popular whitewater freestyle kayaking areas on the River Thames – why not pack your wetsuit and give it a go? Once you pass Cookham, you will stroll along the edge of rare marshland before arriving in Marlow for the evening.

7 miles (11km) and minimal ascent

  • Day 4 – Marlow to Henley

Today you will pass through three counties and alongside three ancient mosaic sites. Bisham Abbey, Medmenham Abbey and Culham Court can all be admired from the path along this section. The towpath turns south as you approach the Henley Regatta course which runs from Temple Island to Henley Bridge. Cross the bridge to leave Berkshire and enter Henley on the Oxfordshire bank.

8.5 miles (13km) and minimal ascent

  • Day 5 – Henley to Reading

There are some beautiful sights to see as you exit Henley today. The towpath runs past Mill Marsh Meadows where you can visit the Rowing Museum behind the trees if you have the time. You will pass many Edwardian riverside houses with former owners including playwright Terence Rattigan and fashion designer Norman Hartnell. After Shiplake, the Thames is a green corridor into Reading via the village of Sonning.

10 miles (16km) and minimal ascent

  • Day 6 – Reading to Pangbourne

The river provides a pleasant route through some more urban areas of Reading, Tilehurst and Purley. As you get closer to Pangbourne, the path runs alongside meadows. In the field after TC gate 189 there is a brief view of Hardwick House in the distance on the Oxfordshire bank. Many monarchs including Elizabeth I and Charles I visited the estate. The house is thought to also be the inspiration for ‘Toad Hall’, the fictional landed estate featured in Kenneth Grahame’s timeless children’s novel ‘Wind in the Willows’.

7 miles (11km) and minimal ascent

  • Day 7 – Pangbourne to Goring

Your final walking day is the shortest in length and allows you to explore more of the beautiful features of Pangbourne and the surround area. At Whitchurch the path will divert from the riverside and the leads to the only steep climb of the route. This high section allows you to wander through woodland with views that look down on the towpath before you head north towards Goring Gap. Once you reach Goring, this is where your trip ends, unless you have booked an extra night of accommodation or additional services through us.
