Cycle along the River Danube across Bavaria in southern Germany, sticking mostly to quiet riverside tracks. With the route being almost completely level, this is the perfect trip for families. Ride through deep gorges, historic German towns, and picturesque woodlands. This is a great trip for anyone new to cycling holidays!

About & Details

The River Danube starts its journey deep in the black forest of Germany, you join the river at the town of Ulm. Enjoy easy cycling along the bank of the river and pass through historic German towns such as Lauingen, Donauworth and Regensburg. Admire impressive architecture along the route and sample the delicious local food delicacies on offer. Cycling is a great way to explore this region, allowing you to really take your time and experience the local culture. This section of the Danube is very popular with families around Europe, and you will meet many fellow cyclists along your route.  We provide you with GPX files, a guidebook and take all the stress out of organising a cycling holiday, you just turn up and ride! We also offer trips along other sections of the Danube as it flows towards the Black sea.

If you would like a guide to lead the way, then we are happy to help and can provide a qualified cycle leader, also trained in first aid.  Having a guide with you will not only take the stress out of navigation, but can also be a great asset in providing an insight into all things cycling.


We run the River Danube Cycle – Ulm to Passau as a self-guided or fully supported event.

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Ulm

    Arrival at your accommodation and relax for the evening.

  • Day 2 - Ulm to Lauingen

    Cycling along almost completely flat cycle tracks, leave Ulm and cross into Bavaria. Passing through long stretches of riparian forest before skirting around the Donaumoos, an area of low-lyeing fenland dotted with small lakes.

  • Day 3 - Lauingen to Donauworth

    Cycling along the Danube through a wide agricultural valley with more areas of fenland to the south, reach Blindheim. Crossing the river, follow minor roads to Donauworth.

    25 miles (40km)

  • Day 4 - Donauworth to Ingolstadt

    Cycling through the foothills of the Frankische Alb, follow long sections of field tracks before crossing the Danube into the impressive renaissance town of Neuburg. Cycling along the wooded flood plain reach the city of Ingolstadt.

    37 miles (60km)

  • Day 5 - Ingolstadt to Kelheim

    Cycling along a wide valley reach the town of Vohburg and admire the limestone foothills of the Frankische Alb. From Weltenburg the Danube has cut a sheer sided gorge through the hills, catch a boat to Kelheim through the gorge.

  • Day 6 - Kelheim to Regensburg

    Continuing to cycle along the river, riding past many large meanders before reaching the impressive medieval city of Regensburg.

  • Day 7 - Regensburg to Straubing

    Cycling southeast follow the northern edge of the Gauboden plain with the foothills of the Bayerischer Wald forest rising to the north. Passing the famous monument “King Ludwig’s Walhalla” constructed to commemorate Germanic heroes.

    33 miles (53km)

  • Day 8 - Straubing to Deggendorf

    Continuing along the northern edge of the Gauboden plain, admire the wooded slopes of the Bayerisher Wald on the left bank before reaching Deggendorf.

    24 miles (39km)

  • Day 9 - Deggendorf to Passau

    Following the north bank of the river along The Gauboden plain reach a wooded gorge. The riding gently undulates as it approaches the pretty baroque city of Passau and the end of your trip!

    35 miles (56km)

Charity Information

How to take part for Charity

To do this challenge for a charity there is a non-refundable registration fee, payable to Maximum Adventure at the time of booking. You can then choose between the two different options below.


Pay a registration fee at the time of booking then the balance due 10-weeks before departure. With the self-funding option, you personally cover the full cost of the challenge. This option means that there is no minimum sponsorship target due, but we encourage you to raise as much money as you can for the charity.

Minimum Sponsorship Pledge

Pay a registration fee at the time of booking and confirm with your charity their minimum fundraising requirements for the balance. This will typically be double the cost of the adventure, less the registration fee. With the minimum sponsorship pledge option, you must submit 80% of your fundraising target to the charity 10 weeks before the departure date.
