About this Adventure

Follow the River Danube between these two magnificent cities, crossing from Western, into Eastern Europe. Admire the changes in culture as you ride along the river and take in all the sights that the Danube has to offer. Like our other river cycling trips the riding is mostly level, making it perfect for leisure cyclists.

About & Details

The route starts in the city of Vienna, a classic European capital city, known for its historic buildings and architecture. As you leave the city, follow the Danube through quiet Austrian towns and villages before reaching the Slovak capital of Bratislava. Enjoy sightseeing in the city before continuing through Slovakia and into Hungry. Cycling is a great way to explore this region, allowing you to really take your time and experience the local culture. Reaching Budapest you will certainly have earnt a beer, be sure to explore this vibrant city before you leave.  We provide you with GPX files, a guidebook and take all the stress out of organising a cycling holiday, you just turn up and ride! We also offer trips along other sections of the river as it flows towards the Black sea.

If you would like a guide to lead the way, then we are happy to help and can provide a qualified cycle leader, also trained in first aid.  Having a guide with you will not only take the stress out of navigation, but can also be a great asset in providing an insight into all things cycling.

We run the River Danube Cycle – Vienna to Budapest as a self-guided or fully supported event.

To book as a self-guided trip simply select the date in the calendar and follow the booking procedure.  You will then receive an automated confirmation and full details will follow from our office in due course.

Itinerary

  • Day 1 - Arrive in Vienna

    Arrival at your accommodation and relax for the evening.

  • Day 2 - Vienna to Bratislava

    Cycling out of Vienna through the Prater Gardens, cross to the left bank of the Danube and follow long straight flood dykes through riparian wooded wetlands of the Donau-Auen national park. Crossing the river before the historic town of Hainburg to enter Slovakia and reach Petrzalka, opposite the Slovak capital of Bratislava. 41 miles (66km)

  • Day 3 - Bratislava to Mosonmagyarovar

    Out of Bratislava the Danube splits into several channels between the main river. Cycling towards the Hungarian border and following cycle tracks through countryside all the way to the town of Mosonmagyarovar. 23 miles (37km)

  • Day 4 - Mosonmagyarovar to Gyor

    Cycling southwest through the Szigetkoz plain between the Danube and Mosoni Duna rivers, pass through a series of quiet villages along the cycle track before reaching the historic city of Gyor. 25 miles (40km)

  • Day 5 - Gyor to Komarom

    Cycling away from the river, head east through gently rolling countryside following country roads and cycle tracks. Crossing and recrossing a low ridge then turn north to re-join the Danube at Komarom. 33 miles (53km)

  • Day 6 - Komarom to Esztergom

    Continuing cycling east, skirt the edge of a range of hills that stretch down the river. The route is generally flat all the way to the ancient city of Esztergom. 33 miles (53km)

  • Day 7 - Esztergom to Szentendre

    Heading out of Esztergom reach the most attractive of the Hungarian sections. Cycling along the river as it curves south, cutting a narrow gap between wooded mountains known as the Danube Bend. Cross the river by ferry to avoid sections of busy road, then recrossing to visit Visegrad and the artists’ town of Szentendre. 30 miles (48km)

  • Day 8 - Szentendre to Budapest

    Following mostly dedicated cycle tracks along the right bank of the Danube head towards the Hungarian Capital. Riding into Budapest pass the neo-gothic parliament building across the river before ending your trip below the royal palace. 15 miles (24km)

Charity Information

How to take part for Charity
To do this challenge for a charity there is a non-refundable registration fee, payable to Maximum Adventure at the time of booking. You can then choose between the two different options below.

Self-Funding
Pay a registration fee at the time of booking then the balance due 10-weeks before departure. With the self-funding option, you personally cover the full cost of the challenge. This option means that there is no minimum sponsorship target due, but we encourage you to raise as much money as you can for the charity.

Minimum Sponsorship Pledge
Pay a registration fee at the time of booking and confirm with your charity their minimum fundraising requirements for the balance. This will typically be double the cost of the adventure, less the registration fee. With the minimum sponsorship pledge option, you must submit 80% of your fundraising target to the charity 10 weeks before the departure date.
